Thanks to Betty, we were all invited to experience a traditional "Chicken Run" at a farm about 40 miles NW of Abbeville by Church Point, LA. Costumed horseback riders go from farm to farm "asking" for chickens which will later be used for a Gumbo. The riders dismount, party and dance at each stop, culminating with the last stop at Mr. Standford's farm. The Parade follows this revelry which includes "floats" of all types!
Upon arrival, Mr. Standford greeted us and showed us a place to set up our party. It is, after all, just like a giant tail gate party! Since getting up early and departing Betty's at 7:30 a.m. in a 10-vehicle caravan, we were all ready for some solid food and serious liquid refreshments. Several brought Bloody Mary's and Wendell brought his gas grill and cooked various morsels brought by everyone, including shrimp on a skewer.
Here we are enjoying our refreshments and waiting for the riders and parade . . . that's half the fun of it! I am actually pictured, but I'm not telling you which one is me!
This is the El Capitan . . . he would go first and ask the farmers' permission to come on their land.
Some of our group dancing with the revelers.
Nancy!
Irene (Betty's aunt)!
Betty and the El Capitan!
Mr. Standford--the gracious farmer who invited us!
