The town of Fayette grew up around two blast furnaces, a large dock and several charcoal kilns after the Civil War. Nearly 500 residents--many from Canada, British Isles, and northern Europe--lived in and near this town that existed to make pig iron for the Jackson Iron Company. It saw 24 years of operation, closing in 1891. The location is now a Michigan State Historical Park.
