They have consolidated the three large staging areas for cleaning the beach into just one, which is where the old St. Park headquarters and condos used to be and is huge. It's almost impossible to get a picture of all of the heavy equipment, trailers, dumpsters, and support equipment (RV news unit, ambulance, etc.) and what looks like hundreds of pickup trucks of workers.
We talked to a supervisor today outside of Bubba's restaurant. I asked him if they were going to dig up the entire beach and he said YES! He said they are digging 18" to 4' deep, sifting the sand, and returning it to the beach. He estimated it would be a five-year project.
The economy here is suffering . . . we can see it everywhere. Perhaps after the holidays, when all the RV snowbirds get down here, things will pick up.
When we were leaving a Doc's restaurant in Orange Beach yesterday, a filming crew from a local TV station was there doing a story.
UPDATE: Today (12/4) on our way to Tequila's restaurant on Ft. Morgan Road, we found another staging area for oil cleanup crews. Two Coast Guard people were eating at the restaurant, but we didn't get to talk to them.
